The Railway Consultancy Ltd - Specialists in Planning Economics and Management

Analysis, Research & Training

Data Analysis

With skills in both data management and railway operation, we are adept at analyzing railway data in such fields as ticketing information, passenger counts, train diagrams and staff rosters.

Market Research

It is important for railways to understand the details of their markets, as well as getting aggregate management information. We have conducted a number of small-scale specialist market research studies, supported by additional field-workers where necessary, to ascertain particular market characteristics.

Industrial Research

The identification of business opportunities is essential if railway companies are to develop their markets and profitabilities. We have been involved, not only in desk-top exercises, but also in the field in discussions with potential major customers.

  • Examples: Railway Market Identification Study, Any Effects Ltd; analysis of where to site line-side mobile phone masts (for One2One) and supermarkets on stations (for Sainsburys).

Operational Research

The technical nature of the railway, and its requirement to be safe, sometimes necessitate detailed research. Statistical techniques may be required in order to prove that particular solutions for trains and/or stations are operable.

Training

The expertise of our staff is often in demand for the training of others within the railway industry, especially as fragmentation of the industry has led to a loss of experienced staff. We have assisted those in the industry with both hands-on experience with front-line staff, and class-room style courses, especially in the key areas of railway operations and passenger demand.

Teaching

We have considerable experience in lecturing to a wide range of groups, and have a considerable academic pedigree, which means that we are called to be invited speakers on key railway planning topics.

  • Examples: Lectures at the Universities of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Birmingham; presentations for IIR conferences and at seminars for Irish Railways
